My little cheese ball had to dress up this morning, because she was so grumpy.

After trick or treating, Tegan took off her costume, and stole the costume of Andrew's mother, because she thought it was cuter. I guess next year we will have to get something a little more girly.

Tyson had his Tae Kwon Do tournament today. Here are some pictures of him doing his form, for which he got 1st place, and sparring, for which he won 2nd place. Though you can't see his face, Tyson's chest shield is red. The first picture is Tyson looking very proud of himself after receiving his first place metal. I have videos of him sparring, which I will try to get up tomorrow.

Splunking?

Last weekend we decided to spend some time outdoors and finally visit the Maquoketa Caves. The caves range in size from alcoves in the cliffs to full caves with trails going under the roads and hibernating bats. The cave on the left, is the Teegy cave, small enough only for the most adventurous of babies. A couple of times there were caves that Tyson went in by himself (with strangers). The first, the Up and Down cave had a entrance up about 3 feet off the ground, where you dropped four feet into a hole, and crawled through into a room with a 7' ceiling. off to one side was another crawlspace leading up to a hold overlooking the entrance. Next is Ice Cave, where the temperature dropped about 20 degrees when you went inside, which felt really good. As you walked through a large cavern there was a tunnel to walk through leading to a small room. tyson was very disappointed by the graffiti, and Tegan was quite scared of the darkness when we turned out the flashlights. Next is Dancehall, the largest cave at the park. Here Tyson found a pathway that lead to a lookout above where we were standing in the cave. We had a great time, and look forward to when we can go back.

So Tegan is now one. She had her checkup yesterday, where the doctor said she is doing great, but is a little on the small side. So we are supposed to put butter, cheese, whipped cream and frosting on everything she eats now to try to increase her caloric intake. But as you can see, she doesn't seem to mind the frosting. Other than the weight she is doing well, and probably pretty soon she will be walking. On the talking side she definitely says hi, bye, up, and sometimes dada, mama, dog, copper, Tyson. Like her brother, once she starts talking, she will probably never stop.

Tonight Tyson started his "learn to play hockey" class. We view it as a "learn to ice skate with pads on so you don't hurt yourself" class. Despite how often he fell down, and the laying on the ice and/or pounding the ice with his fists after falling down one too many times (who does that sound like??) he did a really good job. He skated off the ice all by himself, didn't throw a fit, or come off too early, and he even said he sort of enjoyed himself. Yeah! Hopefully by the end of the 8 weeks he will be a great ice skater.

Tegan with her first fat lip. Tyson was trying to get her to crawl faster by pushing her back as she moved across the floor, resulting in slamming her face into the floor. Oh well. It's pretty much gone by now.

Here you can actually see Tyson performing his winning form. He got 1st place in his group of 8 year old yellow belts, and he believes, do to the fact that he was the only yellow belt with his medal, that he got first among all yellow belts as well. He did a great job and we are very proud of him.

Testing for yellow belt

Last Friday Tyson tested for his yellow belt. Here are some pictures. It is kind of hard to see, but in most of these pictures he is either lining up, or performing the Chun Gee form, which is the set of blocks and punches associated with moving from white belt to yellow belt.

So last Friday, December 12, Tyson tested for the next belt in Tae kwon do. Then tonight, there was a belting ceremony, where he became an official yellow belt. According to him, he will continue to take TKD until he becomes a green belt, then he will take a brake for a while, since green is favorite color. I am not quite sure, but i think one could say that Tegan is now sitting. Though I don't think I would trust her balance on our wood floors quite yet.

Eating

Tegan has taken to making the "bulldog" face when eating. Which involves breathing heavily through her nose and making a face, after almost every bite.

Tyson wanted to try feeding Tegan, which I thought might be cute. As you can see, Tegan had a little problem with Tyson's authority, and whether or not it was alright for him to be holding the bowl. While you can't actually see it, she does have a huge smile of victory in the last picture.

September update #2: Tegan at 4months

This has been a big month for Tegan. She had an appointment, where they basically said she is long, skinny, with a bug head. And, she started eating solid foods. So far she has had sweet potatoes/yams (not quite sure what the difference is), carrots, peas, avocado, pear, apple and banana. All in a nice rice slurpy. Pictured is her first supper (of doom).

September update #1: Tae Kwon Do Tyson

for the first time ever, Tyson decided to take Tae kwon do. We have talked about it before but this is the first year we actually found a class and tried it. So now, three days a week, for 1 hour each time, Tyson learns the moves, and tenets of Tae kwon do. Here he is demonstrating the stance for the front stretch kick, the chen gee (sort of like at ease) and attention.

Summertime

So far Tegan seems to enjoy summer fashion more than spring fashion. Since Tyson has been home Tegan seems to like him a lot more. Before he left on his summer trips, Tyson would often make Tegan cry, just by holding her or talking to her. Now, however, she really adores him. On friday Tyson had his science fair at the Children's Museum, where his project was to demonstrate Alka Seltzer rockets. Yesterday, we took Tegan swimming for the first time. She had absolutely no reaction. No smiles. No crying. Not even when other kids splashed water in her face. I have high hopes that she will become another water baby like her big brother.

4th of July

The kids and I spent the 4th in Minnesota, where we visited historic Fort Snelling. Tyson enjoyed climbing the circular watch tower, and laying in the soldier's bunks. However, when it came time to watch fireworks I was all alone.

Tegan's 2 month

So today Tegan had her 2 month appointment. She weighs 11lbs, which i thought sounded like a lot but is really only the 48th percentile. For height she is 22.3 inches long, which is 22%. However, like her big brother, her head is the 68th percentile. Overall she is perfect, and growing and hitting milestones, like holding up her head, ahead of the curve.

Indianapolis Children's Museum

We were very excited to go to the Children's museum on Sunday, not only because Matt went with us, but also because the two new exhibits were Super Heros, and Cartoon Network Animation. Despite all the great exhibits, Tyson's favorite thing was the water table. Are we surprised?? Matt enjoyed the Dinosaur exhibit, where there was a super croc and the new dinosaur, Dracorex Hogwartsia ( i kid you not, it's named after J.K. Rowling) on display. And of course, since we are in Indianapolis, we had to have a photo of Tyson in an Indy race car.

Indianapolis Zoo

On Saturday, Tyson, Tegan and I went to the Indianapolis Zoo. It was a medium sized zoo, with an oceanarium, African plains, and a new Koala exhibit. Though it may not look like it in the photos, Tyson had a good time. Before we left, both Tyson and Tegan got identification cards, where we learned that Tyson, when he was younger, sucked his thumb print off.

It has been interesting determining which of the baby soothers Tegan actually likes. So far she seems to dig the swing, but only if she is really tired. She also likes the Boppy papasan chair, in which she sleeps in a little nest. However, the vibration, and "womb-like" sounds seriously disturb her.

Flood: Part II

So supposedly the flood is on the way out; moving downstream to affect other towns. While we are far enough from the river that we have remained dry, we are still feeling the pain of the flood in the guise of traffic pains. Since the river is flooded, they had to close 3.5 of the 5 bridges in town. I say .5 because though one bridge was open, the road on the east side of the bridge was closed, making it almost impossible to use said bridge. Due to the bridge issues, the University decided to close this week. And now, while the river is receding, U is still closed due to traffic and parking constraints. In fact I got an email today sending people home because those on campus were using too much electricity, placing a increased burden on the electrical plants that are currently working at 20% capacity. Supposedly next week things will be better.

As far as clean up in concerned, I have heard that some places, such as my bank on the strip think it will be at least a month before they open, while other places, a church by Tyson's school (which is probably under 4-6ft of water) will be at least a year.

These pictures are from highway 6, (near our house) at the bridge, which just reopened toady. You can sort of see how close to the road the water still is.

Flood: part I

This past weekend Ian came to visit Tyson and Tegan. While he was here he convinced Tyson, and about 5 other little boys, to jump like a frog, along with the toad that Ian had caught for them. The next morning, on our way to the art festival I got a call, asking for volunteers to sandbag Tyson's teacher's house. During the next three hours, Ian and I helped build a sandbag wall around Ms. White's house, while Tyson did a fabulous job babysitting Tegan inside the house. Just a few hours ago, the city of Iowa City issued a mandatory evacuation notice of the neighborhood, and street that Ms. White lives on, so obviously our work was for a purpose. As a side note, despite the high level of the water all over IC so far, they are predicting that the river will not crest until late next week, and that was without any more rain between now and then, and not including the half inch or so of rain we have gotten since the prediction was posted. So maybe, by the end of next week, we will be stranded in our house, not because there will be water on our street, but because all the roads towards downtown, or the UI campus, including I80 which they are closing tomorrow, will be underwater.

Birth of Baby Girl

As most of you already know, Tegan was born on May 1st, weighing in at 6lbs. 12oz, just three oz less than Tyson weighed oh so many years ago. After a few uneventful days in the hospital, we went home with Tegan weighing 6lbs 7oz. In the next week we were visited by lots of family.
